How To Eat Vegan At NANDOS!

I used to visit Nandos regularly when I ate meat, and then as a vegetarian, but I haven’t been back since transitioning to a vegan lifestyle. With so many different varieties of chicken, I got it into my head that there would be nothing in this meaty restaurant for me to eat.

HOWEVER, Nandos have kindly offered to prove me wrong! Providing me and a couple of other Norwich based bloggers with a freebie dinner, I was able to test out just how many options on their menu are vegan. They provided me with their huuuge allergens menu and here’s what I found…..

Houmous and pitta bread with Peri-Peri drizzle – I LOVE this combination. Yes, houmous and pitta is a classic combo for vegan appetizers BUT the sauce drizzled on top transforms it! I assumed the drizzle would have milk in, but nope, completely vegan. You can also order a little pot of the drizzle on its own too for 50p if you want it with your main. I always end up getting through at least two bottles….

Mixed olives

Peri-Peri nuts

Garlic bread – yes, really!!

Corn on the cob

Peri salted chips

Mixed leaf salad

Chargrilled veg (peppers, red onion, courgette)

Chilli jam

Portabello mushroom

Veggie Burger – A spicy soya and tomato burger seasoned with spring onion, green chilli and cayenne pepper. It comes with mayo, so you’ll just need to request they leave it out 🙂

Veggie Pitta – Same as above, just in a pitta.

Veggie Wrap – Same as above but it comes with chilli jam and yoghurt mayo – the chilli is fine, just ask for no yoghurt mayo.

Portabello Mushroom & Halloumi Burger – Skip the halloumi and double up on the mushroom!

Portabello Mushroom & Halloumi Pitta – As above.

Portabello Mushroom & Halloumi Wrap – As above.

You can choose the spice level for your wrap/ pitta/ burger – there’s plain, mango & lime, lemon & herb, medium, hot and extra hot. GOOD NEWS… All these glazes are vegan!

All vegan!

Quinoa Salad – Sweet potato and avocado chunks, piccolo tomatoes, cucumber, crisp salad leaves and a good sprinkling of feta cheese, sesame & roasted seeds – Just ask for it without feta.

Avocado and Green Bean Salad – Sweet chargrilled red onions and crunchy leaves with a tangy dressing. Sprinkled with sesame and toasted seeds.

Mediterranean Salad – Piccolo tomatoes, cucumber, celery, sweet peppers and mixed leaves in paprika dressing. Sprinkled with olives and feta cheese – Ask for it without feta cheese.

Passionfruit gelado – Nandos’ take on ice cream

Hiya 🙂 The garlic bread at Nando’s in all UK branches is 100% vegan as they use oil instead of butter. However this might be different in Nando’s in other countries – I think the one you are referring to is based in the US? But good to know it’s not vegan over there! Shame 🙁 Thanks for your comment!

Wow i’m also a Jess J(I didnt leave the first comment). You are correct I think they have changed the ingredients this year because I was also under the impression they used butter and remember looking. I looked up Corn on the Cob this evening online and it says ‘milk’.. perhaps this is just referring to the packet of butter that comes with it though…???

Haha how strange! Hello Jess J 2 🙂 With the corn, I’ve always just specified ‘no butter’ when ordering in case some stores put butter on. So it usually comes out plain, with a little salt so it’s definitely vegan!

Hi 🙂 Thanks for your comment – I have been in touch with the Nandos customer service team who have advised that shellac is not one of the ingredients but may (or may not) be present on the lemons they use within the sauce… Good to know!

It doesn’t matter that it may only “may contain” shellac, it is not the same as an allergen warning. By Nandos using lemons that have been waxed with shellac, it doesn’t matter even even none of the shellac goes into the sauce because waxed lemons have still been purchased for their lemon juice. It’s the same as buying a bottle of cows milk because you wanted to use the plastic bottle, even if you poured all of the milk in the sink and didn’t drink a drop, cows have still suffered because you have brought the bottle. Lac bugs will still be exploited if we buy wax lemons (even if we don’t eat the wax).

When ordering in Nando’s today, I was told (for the first time, despite many, many previous visits!) that I could only have my burger plain as NONE of the sauces were suitable for vegans. Their website also now says sauces are not suitable for vegans (something that it never used to say). Very disappointed.

Hey, yeah this is really disappointing!! I think this may be due to them not being able to confirm that 100% of the lemons used in the sauces are shellac free. As they cant guarantee it, they are now saying all sauces are unsuitable for vegans. Sad times 🙁

During my last visit to Nandos I was told by the store manager (with the allergens book in front of them) that the spicy rice was not suitable. Can’t remember why now. Sorry 🙁

I’m currently sat in Nando’s in Cheshire, UK. I’ve been told only the chips and salads are vegan out of sides. I’m on the non-mayo burger though. 🙂

Just to update this, I’m on the website now and I can’t find the passionfruit gelado, but it does say the mango gelado is vegan!
